GWAREDIT Release 3.1!
Copyright (c) 1991-1992 James N. Helm
Shareware Release
Thank for you trying out GWAREDIT Release 3.1! This program took many
hours of work and much effort. I would like to ask that you please register
this program if you find it useful and intend on using it for any length of
time. Without registration, you will NOT be able to save any of the games you
edit. The first two releases are NOT Shareware, and may be distributed as you
see fit. This version is the only one that will edit the new Global War 2.40
games. To register, you can send $10 to James Helm. This will allow you to
optain a REGISTRATION CODE from his BBS. If you cannot call out, or you
are long distance, you can obtain the latest version on floppy disk, along
with your personal REGISTRATION CODE by sending an extra $5 ($15 total),
along with the registration form (REGISTER.FRM) included with this file. You
can send any checks to (I wouldn't recommend sending cash through the mail):
James N. Helm
13 Rickover Ct.
Annapolis MD 21401
You can also reach me at my BBS:
The Endless Quest
(410) 267-7376
WWIVnet 1@3116 (* At the time of this release, I
may not be officially on the NET.
Just keep checking, and I should
be NET validated shortly. *)
If you have REGISTERED GWAREDIT, and you find an error that is
considered valid, and major, I will glady send you out a NEW copy of the
editor on floppy disk FOR FREE. I want to maintain the highest standards for
GWAREDIT, and make it as perfect as possible. Please report any errors
immediately to me; either through my BBS or through the mail.
Please include the registration form with any money, so I know who to
give the proper access to, or where to send the floppy disk. YOU ONLY HAVE TO
PAY ONCE! Once you have sent at least $10 registration fee, you will ALWAYS be
allowed to download future versions of GWAREDIT from my BBS at NO CHARGE.
Thank you for trying GWAREDIT Release 3.1! Please support future versions and
Shareware development!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you first run GWAREDIT you will see a screen letting you know if it's
registered or not, and giving you some general information about how and where
you should run GWAREDIT. You should take a minute to read through this screen.
After the opening screen, you will see a line at the top of the screen
with four possible commands: Edit a game, Generate a game, List valid files,
and of course, Quit.
+=============+
EDIT A GAME
+=============+
Top of screen data
------------------
If you press E, it will pop up a line asking you to enter the number of
the game you wish to edit. Just enter the game number, and it will then
display the edit screen. At the top of this screen, there will be a portion of
it sectioned off. In this top portion, is basic game information. It will tell
you what TYPE of game it is, the number of players in the game, the game
number, fortification information, if the player names are Hidden or Known,
and how many sets of commendations have been turned in. (Depending on which
version of Global War, you will get different fortification information.) In
the latest GWAR version, (v2.40+) it will also tell you the "Play-Sequence"
status. There will be a separation line, and under that will be Player and
Country options. Most of these values CAN be changed. You can make the player
names either Hidden or Known, change the play-sequence (for v2.40+ only) to
either Non-Sequential or Sequential, you can change the number of
fortification moves allowed (for v2.40+ only) to anything from 0-99, or if you
are using v2.32 or earlier, you can change the fortifications to Limited or
Unlimited. You also have the option to change the number of sets of
commendations turned in so far, 0-99. (It will display to the right of that
how many armies the next set will be worth.) All you have to do is press the
number that is in front of each of these values, and it will prompt you for
the rest.
Player editor
-------------
You will see the players names who are in that current game. They will
appear in the same colors you would see them in Global War, and likewise, if
they are dead in that game, they will be grey. To edit a player, just type the
number that appears before their name, and press ENTER. It will then display a
screen all about that particular player. At the top of this screen, you will
see the player name, when they last took their turn (in days), their total
armies, and how many commendations they have from the General, King and Queen.
You edit all of these, except total armies, by pressing the number that is
before each of them, and pressing ENTER. The name CANNOT be more than 17
Characters long. If you enter in more than 17, it will just chop off the extra
letters at the end. You can change when that player last took their turn, from
anywhere to 0 days to 50. Also, for the commendations you can set that value
from 0-99. (NOTE: Be careful when dealing with commendations! Check how many
armies they have total, and what the next set will be worth. If you give a
player armies that are MORE than 32767, Global War will have ERRORS!)
There will be a separation line between that and the players countries.
The countries are display by continent. You will see ALL the countries that
appear on the map. The ones that particular player owns will be highlighted.
The amount of armies that that country contains will follow. To edit the
number of armies in any of the countries, simply press the number that is
before the country you want, and enter a value between 1 and 999. To leave the
player editor, type 48 and press ENTER.
Display map
-----------
After you are back out in the main menu, underneath the player names you
will see more commands. 7, is the DISPLAY MAP feature. You MUST have a file
called GWAREDIT.MAP that should have come with the editor. If it is not in the
directory where GWAREDIT is running, you CAN still run GWAREDIT, but you will
not be able to use this feature. Once you press 7, the familiar Global War map
will appear in front of you. You will start off on the GLOBE. To change which
map you see, simply press numbers 1-7, or 8 to Quit. (The map names will
appear to your right, along with player names and game number.)
Country ownership
-----------------
Under the Display Map feature, you will see a command called COUNTRY
OWNERSHIP. Once you select country ownership, you will see a new screen with
all the countries displayed by continent, along with the player names across
the top. The countries will be in different colors, depending on which player
owns them. Just press the number in front of the country, and it will tell you
who owns it, and ask you to enter the number of the player you wish to own it.
It will then change the countries color to the new player color. If you take
all the countries away from one person, they will be eliminated from the game,
and that person's color will change to grey. To exit, type 43 and press ENTER.
Edit a new game
---------------
The "Edit a new game" command is used when you want to leave the game
you are currently in, and either generate a new game, or edit another one. If
you press 9, it will ask if you would like to save your changes to this game.
If you press Y, it will tell you when the data has been saved. After you press
a key, it will return you to the beginning four commands. You can then choose
to Edit another game, Generate a new game, List the valid files, or Quit.
Quit GWAREDIT
-------------
This command is fairly self explanatory. When you enter 10, it will
ask you if you would like to save the current game. Press either Y (Yes), N
(No), or A (Abort). If you press A, it WON'T exit the program. It will return
to the game you are currently editing. If you press Y, it will save the game,
then drop you to DOS. If you press N, it will instantly drop you to DOS. This
will end your GWAREDIT session.
+=================+
GENERATE A GAME
+=================+
When you select Generate a game, it will first prompt you with a
question, "Generate a game Before, or After Global War v2.40?" If you have the
latest version of Global War, (2.40 or later), the .DAT files are slightly
changed, with different values. If you aren't sure, enter B for before, Global
War 2.40 WILL read in and use the old .DAT files. (But, if you do have version
2.40, you have certain extra options that will enhance the users' enjoyment of
the game.) If you select A or B, you will get a list of questions.
1) Normal or Team game?
a) If you select TEAM game, it will automatically assume 6
players.
b) If you select NORMAL game, you will be able to choose between
3-6 players.
2) Hidden or Known player names?
a) If you select HIDDEN, the other players in that game won't be
allowed to see the other players names, until the game is
over, or the other player is dead.
b) If you select KNOWN, all the players will know exactly who
is playing in the game with them.
v2.32 3) Limited or Unlimited fortifications?
a) This question will not be asked if you selected v2.40 and
after.
b) With LIMITED fortifications, players will only be allowed to
make 1 fortification move.
c) With UNLIMITED fortifications, players will be allowed to
fortify their armies until they are done.
v2.40 3) Should Play-Sequence be Sequential, or Non-Sequential?
a) This question will not be asked if you selected v2.32 and
before.
b) If you select NON-SEQUENTIAL, the players will be allowed to
Deploy-Attack-Fortify in ANY order they choose.
c) If you select SEQUENTIAL, the players will have to go through
a Deploy phase, an optional Attack phase, and finally an
optional Fortify phase.
v2.40 4) How many fortification moves allowed?
a) This question will not be asked if you selected v2.32 and
before.
b) For versions 2.40 and after, there are no more "Unlimited
fortifications." You have to select the number of
fortifications the players are allowed to have between 0 and 99.
4) If you selected a NORMAL game, it will ask you how many players
in this game, 3-6?
5) It will then prompt you for each player name, depending on how
many you have chosen, or 6 for a TEAM game. (NOTE: It will
accept ANY character from the keyboard, so be careful to spell
the users' names correctly.)
6) Would you like to save this game?
a) If you choose YES, it will inform you that this game has
begun, and return you to the beginning menu.
b) If you select NO, it will put you back at the beginning menu.
+==================+
LIST VALID FILES
+==================+
When you select List valid files, GWAREDIT will search the current
directory for files it thinks are Global War files, checks them to see if they
are in progress, and determines if they are TEAM or NORMAL games. It will list
them by number (In the order it finds them in the directory, NOT by numeric
order). If the game is a NORMAL game, it will appear in GREEN. If it is a TEAM
game, it will appear in BLUE. A color-key will be on the screen, so you don't
have to remember which is which.
+======+
QUIT
+======+
When you select Quit from this menu, it will automatically drop you to
DOS, and display an information screen. This will end your GWAREDIT session.
Thank you for trying GWAREDIT, this tool can be very useful for SysOp's
who like to have Global War tournaments, or select certain types of games for
fun. This can also help if your computer TIME CLOCK get's disrupted somehow,
and causes Global War to give you errors. (It's helped me quite a few times.)
It can also be used by a SysOp to just see what's going on in Global War.
I would like to thank the many people who have helped me test this,
check for errors, etc. One of them in particular is Jeffery Qualey. He helped
me write this DOC file, as well as helping me with the grammar/aesthetics
portion of GWAREDIT. Much thanks to Jeff. Also Joel Bergen, the author of
Global War, for helping me tremendously, and even donating pieces of his
actual Global War source code for the development of the editor. Without him,
much of this wouldn't have been in this version.
A quick reminder, GWAREDIT is the product of many hours of hard work, and
has been written for YOU. I only ask a small fee for it's use; one that I
think is fair. Please register your copy with the author, James Helm.

Version Information
Release 1: Very first release of the editor. Not very easy to use for
Sysops. Did not contain the Global War MAPS, and did not allow
as many changes to the actual game configuration.
Release 2: MANY bugs were found and fixed with Release 1. This version
also added the complete Global War MAPS, and added the ability
to change many of the game configurable values, such as number
of commendations turned in, player name status, etc. It also
added the ability to change the day at which the player last
took their turn. Players that were dead would have their name
appear in GREY, instead of the normal player color. List Valid
Files was improved to display the filenames across the screen,
instead of down, so more file names at one time could be viewed.
Release 3: This version will edit both Global War games before AND after
version 2.40.
First SHAREWARE release of GWAREDIT. This feature greatly
improved on the second release. It simplified the MAP display
features, changed the country layout for both the Player Editor
and Country Ownership menus to display them by continent, instead
of a random-type sequence. This improves editing ease greatly,
because it does not require the Sysop to have immediate knowledge
of the Global War maps to know which country is in what continent.
Added a Game Generator. This will allow a Sysop to create Global
War games, both version 2.32 and before and 2.40 and after. This
can come in handy for people who like to hold tournaments with
Global War, and need to create certain games with certain players
involved.
Improved the List Valid Files feature to ONLY display the Global
War game number, not the entire file name. It will also display
TEAM and NORMAL type games in different colors.
The Edit a Game feature now only requires the Sysop to enter the
Global War game number, instead of the entire filename. It will
also display ONLY the game number at certain points in the
editor, where it used to display the entire filename.
*Release 3.1: This version is bascially the same as Release 3, but it adds a
registration code, instead of a generic registration. Also, it
combines the REGISTERED and UNREGISTERED versions into one file
instead of two.
